Gearing up for the Lok Sabha elections due in 2014, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday announced an Election Coordination Committee. Rahul Gandhi will head the Election Coordination Committee, which also has five other members. The Congress president also announced three sub-groups namely—Pre Poll Alliances, Manifesto and Government Programs and Communication and Publicity.

This decision had been announced by the Congress president at the recently concluded Samvaad Baithak which took place in Surajkund on 9 November. The coordination committee has been entrusted with ensuring that the organisation and the Government are on the same page as the Lok Sabha elections draw near.

The list is a mix between the young and experienced leaders. Though the balance is still tilted towards the experienced leaders. The core team of the Congress has been retained the names of Ahmed Patel, Janardhan Dwivedi, Digvijaya Singh find resonance in key positions. While young leaders like Jitendra Singh, Deependra Hooda, Sandeep Dixit and Manish Tewari have also been inducted in sub groups.

This committee has also created an active role for Rahul Gandhi who until now had been focusing on specific areas. He now has authority to take party decisons at the national level, preparing him for a larger role in the Congress organizational structure.

With several state elections round the corner the Congress seems to be in a combative mode. Senior ministers of the Union Government have also been included in the current arrangement, though the Congress leaders dominate the list. As the elections close in the reliance on the party infrastructure has increased for the Congress leadership.

The Congress has earmarked issues which it needs to work on. The Pre-poll Alliance sub-group has more experienced leaders in it. While the Publicity and Communication sub-group is a mix of young and older members. However, the group relating to Manifesto and Government programs has Ministers of the Union Government to put across the point.

Reacting to the development senior Congress leader and Defence Minister AK Antony said, “The has given me a responsibility, I am a loyal soldier of the party. I will explore the opportunity of pre poll alliances.”
