Chidambaram to be Finance Minister, Shinde to be in charge of Home
The reshuffle comes a week before the monsoon session of the Parliament
Tehelka.com Bureau
A week before the monsoon session of the Parliament, the UPA government has announced P Chidambaram as the country’s new Finance Minister. After Pranab Mukherjee resigned as the Finance Minister to take up the job as the President of the country, it remained under the temporary charge of Prime Minister Mr Manmohan Singh.
Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde takes over as Home Minister from Chidambaram. Veerappa Moily, former Karnataka Chief Minister will now hold the power ministry along with the Corporate Affairs Ministry he holds.
A notification on the reallocation of ministries has been signed by President Mukherjee.
Chidambaram’s major concern as the new in-charge of the finance ministry will be to tackle the rising fiscal deficit. He is widely credited for his deft handling of the situation during the global recession in 2008, which helped India avoid the worst of the downturn. However, he allegedly played a major role in the 2008 2G scam, therefore enraging the Opposition at the appointment, who had earlier demanded his resignation.
