THE WIRES dangling over the industrial hubs of Punjab will soon go underground, a top official has informed.

A proposal to this effect has been prepared by the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC) for seeking financial help from the Centre. The funds will be divided between Centre and the state in a 70:30 ratio, said MP Arora, Managing Director, PSIEC.

Mohali has been selected as a pilot project for which Rs 10 crore is required. After the completion of the project, the remaining 20 Industrial Focal Points or hubs will be taken up one by one.

In the peak of summer, standing crops worth lakhs of rupees were damaged following short circuit because of the overhead wires, Arora added.

Besides, aid will be provided to ensure the installation of sewage treatment plant in almost all IFPs. Out of the total estimated cost of Rs 47.50 crore, the grant-in-aid from the Centre will be restricted to Rs 33.25 crore and the remaining amount of Rs 14.25 crore will be meted out by the state government, said officials.
