WHILE THE Information and Communications technology (ICT) sector worldwide is responsible for around 0.7 per cent of global CO2 emissions, the total emission of the telecom industry in India is around one per cent of the country’s total CO2 emissions.
Highlighting this issue, FICCI, along with global management consulting firm AT Kearney, revealed a study on promoting green telecom in India on Tuesday.
The study, titled Green Telecom: The Way Forward was released by Sachin Pilot, MoS for Communications and IT. According to the study almost 50 per cent of the current carbon footprint of the telecom sector can be attributed to diesel.

“Going green has become an immediate and compelling necessity for telecom operators. As the second largest and fastest growing market in the world and with future growth of the industry to be driven by the currently under-penetrated rural areas, there is an urgent need for India to be conscious of concerns in this regard,” said the report.
The report on green telecom released on Tuesday, identifies the key imperatives for the industry and the government. It also recommended the telecom industry of India to go greener and cleaner, in an economically sustainable manner.
Stating that India’s high economic growth is set to multiply its emission of the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, Virat Bhatia, chair of the Communications and Digital Economy Committee, FICCI, emphasised on the urgent need to combat the key challenges being faced by our society and the telecom industry like climate change, securing energy supply and meeting the ever increasing energy requirements.
