The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday 10 May admitted Chhattisgarh activist Soni Sori after denying her admission on Wednesday 9 May. As per the directions of the Supreme Court (SC) the hospital has constituted a board, which will examine Sori and submit a detailed report to the SC by 10 July.
According to social activist Himanshu Kumar, her condition is now better than before since bleeding has stopped but she has developed blisters in her genital areas. “This is happening because of the police torture during which they had inserted stones into her genital areas,” he said. No examination has been conducted on Sori since being admitted on Thursday, he added.
As per the SC directions on 2 May Sori was to be admitted at AIIMS within a week, that is by 9 May, but doctors at AIIMS refused to admit her since the police brought her to the hospital after 4 pm, an hour after which the hospital does not admit patients except in emergencies.
Meanwhile, CPI-M MP TN Seema raised the issue of AIIMS refusing to admit Sori on 9 May during the Zero Hour discussion in the Rajya Sabha. “When the Supreme Court has ordered to admit her, on whose authority did AIIMS turn her away on 9 May? Why the government has not ordered a high level inquiry into allegations of custodial violence and sexual exploitation?” she asked. As members from the CPI-M sought a response from the government, Tribal Affairs Minister Kishore Chandra Deo assured the House that he will get details of the matter and “will surely inquire why the AIIMS did not admit her”.
