Supreme Court agrees to send Soni Sori to Kolkata hospital

In a much-needed relief to Soni Sori who was arrested for alleged Maoist links , the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the Chhattisgarh government to get her medical examination conducted at a Kolkata hospital within a week.

A Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir rejected the submission by the Chhattisgarh government that it would arrange for an “independent” medical examination of Sori at Nagpur and instead heeded to the demand by her counsel Colin Gonsalves that the test be conducted in Kolkata. The state government’s counsel Atul Jha offer to get Sori examined at Nagpur came after the court asked the government to choose a city out of Nagpur, Bangalore and Kolkata on Wednesday.

The bench will review the case on November 1. The court has also asked the Chhattisgarh government to present a report on Sori’s medical condition by November 15.

Sori had reportedly suffered injuries in her head and back while she was in the custody Chhattisgarh Police earlier this month. The tribal teacher was arrested in Delhi on October 4 for allegedly receiving “protection money” from the Essar group on behalf of Maoists. The company, however, has denied funding the Maoists.

Sori was taken to Dantewada on transit remand for interrogation but was not produced before a court. The police later claimed that she fell in the bathroom and sustained injuries. On October 11, she was shifted to Raipur-based Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Government Medical College and Hospital from Jagdalpur, headquarters of the Bastar region, where doctors suggested advanced treatment for her injuries.
