No Sanctuary for Good Men

Sanjiv Chaturvedi, 35, HISAR, HARYANA

BATTLING FOR: Protecting Haryana’s forests from the vested interests of its politicians. He tried to stop an illegal canal construction in the Saraswati Wildlife Sanctuary

YAMINI DEENADAYALAN

AFTER 12 TRANSFERS, Sanjiv Chaturvedi, a divisional forest officer in Hisar, has learnt to anticipate the next. He lives alone. His exwife was persuaded (by persons unknown) to believe that he sought the transfers to avoid living with her. His in-laws were paid to slap a dowry case on him. He has been booked under false cases, illegally suspended and chargesheeted by the state government. It took an RTI, an appeal to the Centre and a presidential intervention for his suspension to be revoked. Chaturvedi halted work on a canal being built illegally in Saraswati Wildlife Sanctuary. (Reaction: Warning from Haryana Forest Minister Kiran Chaudhary and transfer). He demanded action against MLA Prahlad Singh Gillakhera whose relatives were buying rare trees for their gardens with crores from the state exchequer. (Reaction: Warning from the forest minister, death threats and suspension). Today Chaudhary is a cabinet secretary and Gillakhera the chief parliamentary secretary. As for Chaturvedi, he is still being good and suffering.
