In a 28-year career as a journalist, Tarun has been an editor with the India Today and The Indian Express groups, and the Managing Editor of Outlook. He is the founder of Tehelka—which has garnered international fame for its aggressive public interest journalism. In 2001, Asia Week listed Tarun as one of Asia’s 50 most powerful communicators, and Business Week declared him among 50 leaders at the forefront of change in Asia. Tarun's debut novel, The Alchemy of Desire, was hailed by The Sunday Times as ‘an impressive and memorable debut’, and by Le Figaro as a ‘masterpiece’. In 2007, The Guardian, UK, named him among the 20 who constitute India’s new elite.

SHOMA CHAUDHURY

Shoma Chaudhury is Managing Editor, Tehelka. Earlier she had worked with The Pioneer, India Today, and Outlook. In 2000, she left Outlook to join Tarun Tejpal, and was among the team that started Tehelka.com. When Tehelka was forced to close down by the government after its seminal story on defence corruption, she was one of four people who stayed on to fight and articulate Tehelka's vision and relaunch it as a national weekly.

Shoma has written extensively on several areas of conflict in India – people vs State; the Maoist insurgency, the Muslim question, and issues of capitalist development and land grab. She has won several awards, including the Ramnath Goenka Award and the Chameli Devi Award for the most outstanding woman journalist in 2009. In 2011, Newsweek (USA) picked her as one of 150 power women who “shake the world”. She lives in Delhi and has two sons.


 
 
ASHOK MALIK

Ashok Malik has been a journalist for 20 years and is contributing editor at Tehelka. He focuses on Indian domestic politics, foreign/trade policy, and their increasing interplay. In 2011, Ashok co-authored a paper: India’s New World: Civil Society in the Making of Foreign Policy, published by the Lowy Institute for International Policy, Sydney. It looked at the influence of Indian business, news media and overseas communities on the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. In 2012, Ashok’s book, India: Spirit of Enterprise (Roli Books) was published. It encapsulates the story of the growth of India’s leading private sector industries since 1991, and their role in the Indian economy.


 
 
RAMESH SHARMA

Ramesh Sharma began his journalism career with The Times of India in 1988, after graduating from The Times School of Journalism (TRF, Institute for Social Sciences, Research & Education), in New Delhi. During his six-plus years with the Times, he handled various responsibilities, including bringing out the main edition of the newspaper. He also reported on politics, environment and social issues. Later, as the desk in charge of The Sunday Times of India, he was instrumental in shaping the Open Space page. He was among the founding members, along with Dileep Padgaonkar and 23 others, of the first independent media organisation run by journalists in New Delhi—the Asia-Pacific Communication Associates (APCA).

Thereafter, Ramesh went on to do a five-year stint with India Today and another five years with the IANS news agency, where he was in charge of producing Asian Voice, a London tabloid aimed at NRIs. In IANS, he also handled two news portals, indiaabroad.com and Indiainfo.com. He has also tried his hands at television journalism, with a two-and-half year stint at Headlines Today, where he was a Senior Producer. In 2007, he was back with APCA to produce a strategic affairs magazine—India & Global Affairs—for the Sakaal Group of newspapers. Ramesh has been with Tehelka since 2009. He is based in New Delhi.


 
 
JEEMON JACOB
Bureau Chief, South

Jeemon Jacob has been a journalist for 26 years both in print and television, as of 2011. He was a Reuters Fellow and spent nine months in Oxford University as visiting scholar in 1994-95. He has headed the political bureau in New Delhi of the Rashtra Deepika group of publications and later joined News Express in Brunei Darussalam as Features Editor. He won the Statesman award for rural reporting in 1987 for his seven articles that exposed a brown sugar racket in Kumily, Kerala.

In 1990, he won the state award for best reporting and in 1992, his article on social alienation of people with HIV/AIDS won the prestigious PUCL Award for human rights reporting in 1992. Jeemon is a graduate in English Literature and Journalism and has exposed the corruption behind the DMK government’s allotting prime land to high court judges, senior civil servants, and the kith and kin of politicians under the government’s discretionary quota. He is based in Thiruvananthapuram.


 
 
RANA AYYUB

Rana Ayyub is primarily an investigations and political affairs journalist who has been with Tehelka since 2008. Prior to that, she has worked with many topnotch news channels in the country as a political affairs and investigations journalist—from reporting on the LTTE in Colombo to reporting on militancy and terrorism in India. Rana has in the past been conferred with the Newsmakers Achievers Award. Recently, she had a major exposé on the involvement of the Gujarat Police and former Gujarat home minister Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case, which led to the subsequent arrest of Amit Shah. She is a post-graduate in journalism and filmmaking and has a literary and journalistic background. She has also dabbled with radio shows and filmmaking after college. She is based in Mumbai.


 
 
KAUSHIK KASHYAP

Kaushik Kashyap has worked across a variety of subjects including business, golf, Bollywood and politics. In the past, he has worked as Features Editor of Men's Health magazine of the India Today Group and as Associate Editor of Maxim. He has also been a Senior Copy Editor and Correspondent in a golf magazine. Kaushik has an MA in English Literature from Delhi University. He is based in New Delhi.


 
 
KUNAL MAJUMDER
Assistant Editor

Kunal Majumder is an Assistant Editor with Tehelka, writes on politics, foreign affairs and books. Since he began his journalistic career in 2006, Kunal has reported on a wide range of topics including design, fashion, business, politics, environment, human rights and the Maoist conflict. In 2011, he won the UNFPA-Laadli Media Award for Gender Sensitivity for Best Feature report and the Statesman Award for Rural Reporting. He currently manages Tehelka’s social media networks and new blogsite – http://blog.tehelka.com and reports on foreign affairs.

Kunal has a post graduate degree in journalism from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi and has spent his exchange semesters in Finland and France.


 
 
BRIJESH PANDEY

In eight years of journalism, as of 2011, Brijesh Pandey has covered two General Elections, four state elections and possibly all major terror attacks in India since 2005 including the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. He has also reported extensively on the Nithari killings, the passport scam involving Members of Parliament, the Aarushi murder case and the Rahul Mahajan case. He has in the past worked with Zee News and CNN-IBN. He lives in Noida.


 
 
ROHINI MOHAN

Rohini Mohan reports on politics, religion and human rights. In six years, as of 2011, she has reported on the Asian tsunami, the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, the anti-Christian riots in Kandhamal, Odisha, and the end of the LTTE in Sri Lanka. She has travelled across India and Sri Lanka writing for The Hindu, CNN-IBN, and Tehelka. In 2009-10, she was a Bollinger Fellow at Columbia University, New York. She is based in New Delhi.


 
 
REVATI LAUL
Special Correspondent

Revati Laul is a Special correspondent with Tehelka, writing on politics. She has been a television reporter and documentary filmmaker. She was reporting for NDTV for a decade - from the time they produced The World This Week on Doordarshan until when they emerged as an umbrella network for a clutch of news channels. She has travelled with truck drivers to ULFA-controlled parts of Assam, reported from the heart of the Kargil conflict and tracked human rights abuse at an asylum for the clinically insane in Madhya Pradesh. She has also reported from Afghanistan - on the 2009 election and then on the story of rebuilding Afghanistan for the international not-for-profit CARE. Outside of politics, Revati loves writing, filming and talking about anything and everything subversive, sex and madness being the most obvious. She also heads a trust for abandoned children in New Delhi, called TARA, where she is known for being friend, companion and slightly mad mentor to 18 boys. She has published a short story in an anthology of young women's fiction called 21 Under Forty by the publishing house Zubaan. She is based in New Delhi.


 
 
TUSHA MITTAL

Tusha Mittal has been with Tehelka since March 2008. She was educated at La Martiniere, Kolkata, and has a bachelor's degree from Depauw University in Indiana. While in the US, she worked as a reporter and a special sections editor for a local newspaper in Boston. She also interned with CNN Internationalin Atlanta and NBC Universal in London. In her final year in college, she studied the idea of peace journalism and the role of the media in covering conflict.

She travelled to Kashmir for her graduation thesis, which dissected the role of the Indian and Pakistani media in shaping public perception of the Kashmir conflict. Her journalism interests include reporting on environment, human rights, and conflict. She has recently won The Press Institute of India award for best articles on humanitarian issues published in the Indian media. At Tehelka, she has written extensively on land rights and displacement struggles. She is based in New Delhi.


 
 
RATNADIP CHOUDHURY

A young IT professional by training and a journalist by chance, Ratnadip comes from the smallest Northeastern state of Tripura and has been reporting out of Northeast India for seven years, as of 2011. He started his career with the Tripura Observer and went on to work with the Northeast Sun , The Northeast Today, News Live, Sahara Time and The Sunday Indian. He has also contributed to BBC, CNN, NatGeo TV, NDTV, CNN-IBN and TIMES NOW. Before joining Tehelka, Ratnadip worked with the national bureau of the television news channel NewsX. He specialises in conflict reporting and has a keen interest in India’s eastern neighbours. He is based in Guwahati.


 
 
SAI MANISH

Sai found his calling in journalism after having done his Honours in Economics from the Shri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi. He is a graduate of the Asian College of Journalism in Chennai. Before joining Tehelka he worked with the Times Group and NDTV. He is based in New Delhi.


 
 
MOHAMMAD UMAR BABA

Baba was born in conflict-ridden Kashmir where he attended school and army’s identification parades, briefly worked at his father’s cloth shop and survived some gun battles to complete masters degree in journalism from the Kashmir University. His career started with The Indian Express in Srinagar where he reported on the South Asia earthquake of 2005. In the following years, he wrote features for Kashmir’s first online news magazine Kashmir Newz and in 2008 he joined Rising Kashmir as a senior reporter where he covered 2008-09-10 civil unrest. He has also contributed to US-based wire CNSNews.com, BBC online and Canadian Dispatches International. Baba specializes in producing stories mostly on Kashmir conflict and water disputes in India. Baba joined Tehelka in 2010 and the next year saw him winning ICRC (Geneva)-Press Institute of India (PII) award for his news report on victims of armed conflict in Kashmir. Be it the landmines-rigged mountains of Kashmir or the water conflicts of central India, his work has won him accolades across the Valley and elsewhere. Currently, Baba is Tehelka’s New Delhi-based Senior Correspondent.


 
 
NISHITA JHA
Senior Correspondent

Nishita Jha has been scribbling on all available surfaces since she could grab a crayon. She went to school at New Delhi’s Sardar Patel Vidyalaya and then studied philosophy at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. She has written on music, movies and pop culture for WorldSpace radio’s web journal, The Voice. For a brief period, she worked with Lalit Kala Akademi as chief coordinator for an international poetry festival before joining Tehelka. Having survived an intense traineeship, she now works as a Correspondent, writing features on environment, education and television. She is based in New Delhi.


 
 
AVALOK LANGER

Avalok Langer studied political science at the University of Delhi. He worked for two years at NDTV, mostly on shows pertaining to youth affairs. He then spent a year on a fact-finding mission across India's conflict zones and border areas. For Tehelka, he reports largely on conflict, social and political issues, and the Northeast. He is based in New Delhi.

Srikanth began his career in 2002 with the Hyderabad edition of The Times of India. After stints at The Hindu, Mindworks Global Media and Sports Illustrated India, he joined Tehelka in July 2010. He is based in New Delhi.


 
 
ANAMIKA CHATTERJEE
Assistant Copy Editor

Anamika Chatterjee was an avid student of English Literature at the University of Delhi, where she received distinction for her academic performance. After this, she went on to study convergent journalism at the AJ Kidwai Mass Communication Research Centre in New Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia. She has worked at Hindustan Times for two years as a senior copy editor, followed by a stint at India Today. She is based in New Delhi.


 
 
ANAND NAOREM
Design Head

A communication design graduate from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Anand Naorem joined Tehelka.com in 2000 as a designer. Currently, he heads the design team at Anant Media Private Ltd., the publishers of Tehelka. His areas of interests include news design, typography, branding and illustration. He is based in New Delhi.


 
 
SUDEEP CHAUDHURI
Art Director

Sudeep Chaudhuri was born in Darjeeling and is a graduate from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. He has been with Tehelka since 2006. He lives in New Delhi with his two wives (one a motorbike), child, books and plants, and dreams of being a taxi driver one day.


 
 
NAOREM ASHISH SINGH

Naorem Ashish Singh was born in Manipur. He studied in New Delhi’s Apeejay School. He has in the past worked with Great Latitude and Knit Yarn. He has been with Tehelka since August 2006. His interests are fine arts, music, movies, cricket and current affairs. He is based in New Delhi.

Ajoy Kumar Sen was raised in Kolkata and holds a Bachelors Degree in Arts from theUniversity of Calcutta. He started off with India Today in 1978 as a trainee and was with them until September 2001. He has been with the design team of Tehelka since February 2004. He has two children and lives in Faridabad.

Mahesh Bhandari holds a Bachelors Degree in Arts from the University of Delhi. He has been with Tehelka since 2008. Before that, he has worked with Aquent Solutions, Mumbai, TechBook and NCERT. He lives in Noida.

Designer

Samia Singh was born in Amritsar and has lived in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu during schooling. She is a graduate from the Srishti School of Art and Design in Bengaluru. She works with illustration, animation, film and music. In Tehelka, she has been an illustrator and designer since January 2010. Her areas of interest are emotions, memory and identity. She is based in New Delhi.

Shailendra Pandey’s accolades include the Picture of the Year award in the inaugural Ramnath Goenka India Press Photo Award function in 2004. His name also figured in the 2007 edition of the Limca Book of Records. He has worked for many national dailies and also the wire agency PTI. He is based in New Delhi.

Vijay Pandey has been with Tehelka since June 2008. Prior to this, he was with the Hindi daily Amar Ujala for eight years. He holds a Masters in Mass Communication from the HNB Garhwal University in Uttarakhand. He is based in New Delhi.
